Paintings, Drawings and Woodcarvings
Paintings and drawings by Rudolf Bonnet are mostly represented in private collections and seldom in Museum collections. Museum Puri Lukisan in Ubud, Bali, owns two drawings.
Rudolf Bonnet has collected many paintings, drawings and woodcarvings by Balinese artists, during his life in Bali (1929-1958). All the woodcarvings in his private collection he donated to Museum Puri Lukisan at the opening of the museum in 1956. Most of his collection of paintings and drawings Bonnet donated to Museum Puri Lukisan as well.
Another part of his Balinese paintings and drawings Rudolf Bonnet took with him to the Netherlands in 1958. Later he sold this collection of 127 paintings and drawings to the University Library in Leiden, which gave the collection on loan to the National Museum of Ethnology in Leiden.
In 2007 the Rudolf Bonnet Foundation made an exhibition of 60 paintings from this Leiden collection and send this exhibition to Bali on the occasion of the 50-year anniversary of the founding of Museum Puri Lukisan in Ubud, Bali. The exhibition was accompanied by a catalogue “Pioneers of modern Balinese painting’’, written by dr Helena Spanjaard.
